Cute boxes from hardwood flooring leftovers!

Hi, Thrifty Girls,

My husband recently installed some five inch wide walnut hardwood flooring. There were quite a few pieces left over. When I saw a cute box on Pinterest with some mason jars in it, I thought these left over pieces might be enough to make a couple of boxes for display. Here are the pictures of the boxes:

The hardwood had 2 grooves on the back, so we turned those to the outside and painted those grooves with gold and silver paint. These apothecary jars came from a yard sale, only $.50 for both. I paid $4.60 for the 2 handles on each box. The box with the gerber daisies( $4.99 for 2 bunches) holds 3 mason jars my mother-in-law gave me. I painted the inside of the jars with a free sample of paint color from Lowe's. The coupon for the free sample was in a magazine. In fact they still have them in several decorating magazines. This Old House, Southern Living, and House Beautiful have included them as part of their Valspar ad. The most recent coupon was good until 10-3-13. These are work really well for small projects (8 oz.), if you don't have the right color on hand and don't want to buy a gallon of paint. These boxes can be filled with pumpkins for fall or Christmas greenery and white twinkle lights.

Total cost for both boxes was $14.69. The gerber daisies ran the cost up, but they look so happy on the patio table, I could not resist.
Happy Thrifting!
