Prepared for Emergency!

NOTE:
This post was written right after the tornado but before all the craziness set in. The picture I originally had of the chicken hair would not upload so I had to wait and find one that would. I realize this will have to be applied when the dust settles but it is still really good information for times such as these! I also see if I had followed my own advise I wouldn't have been standing in the store hoping I could find some hand sanitizer and wipes. LOL!!!

Calling all Thrifties:

Oh Yeah, that's what chicken hair looks like if you have never seen it. No doubt we could look like this if we don't do some sort of emergency preparation.

Our sweet little community just went though a tornado this past week. If was awful to say the least. Lives were lost and so many homes, schools and businesses were damaged or completely destroyed. As I was thinking about this I realized we haven't been through anything like this before so we didn't have a clue.

We go to the grocery store and fill our car up every week just like everybody else. While we have a few packs of dried beans and some Ramen noodles we don't have much in the way of emergency stuff. So I thought maybe since this is fresh on our minds we could think about having some things in reserve instead of thinking nothing will ever happen to us and we won't need it. Well, this week was an eye opener for me.

First, let me say as women we hate to stop and fill up our gas tank. I had rather eat worms than do it but I've learned it always better to have a tank full of gas in case I have to leave quickly. It might be a trip to the emergency room and there you are with your car sitting on empty. Oh dear! So always keep you tank filled.

Moving on... cash. We all use credit or debit cards for our purchases. But this past week I heard someone say you better have cash because the grocery stores card system is down. Wow! That's bad. Especially when you are in a bind needing things. Now I'm not saying you need hundreds of dollars but you need more than a couple of dollars stashed away for emergencies.

Then we need some sort of a first aid kit. They aren't very expensive so you could get one for the car and the house. It has more than a few band aids in it.

We are so dependent on electricity for everything. But we need to have some other things like lanterns, flashlights and lots of extra batteries. Plus it pays to have one of the manual can openers to get your cans opened.

We need wipes and hand sanitizer. These things won't go out of date but they will really come in handy in an emergency. So you can stash them with no worry.

Of course there are so many more things I could include but this is at least a start toward being prepared. This post is not intended to frighten people but the wake up call we had last week tells me I'm not going to wait until something happens then begin scrambling around trying to get it together.

No chicken hair... let's be prepared!!! Have a good week and keep your mind open for things to add to your emergency stash!!
